Straitside Ranch, both our business and our home is located not far from the Dungeness Spit in beautiful Sequim on the North Olympic Peninsula of Washington. The name Straitside comes from our location where we can see the Strait of Juan De Fuca from our house. Our home site covers 19 irrigated acres and we lease or cut hay from many more. We started raising Polled Hereford Cattle in 1980.
In 1993 we started our journey toward developing a herd of Miniature Polled Herefords, something that did not exist at that time. Starting with carefully selected, small well structured polled cows, either purchased or chosen from our own herd, we bred them to a selection of Miniature Horned Hereford Bulls of the "Nugget" line. We now have a growing herd of Miniature Polled Herefords.
The Miniature Hereford is a small 'typey" Hereford, the opposite of the tall, leggy show cattle. They are thick, deep bodied, short legged, muscular and chunky. These "minis" are early maturing, extremely fertile and excellent feed converters. They are easy keepers - very gentle natured. The offspring are very predictable as to type and conformation due to a strong genetic base.
We hope that purchasers of our animals will continue breeding to maintain the best marketable beef traits.
